DSWD DISASTER TEAMS ASSIST LGUs HIT BY “BASYANG”

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman  said that Social Welfare and Development (SWAD) Teams in regions badly hit by typhoon “Basyang”  are now on field to assist local government units in relief operations and to assess the extent of  damage of the disaster.

Secretary Soliman attended today, July 14,  a special meeting called by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) upon instruction of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to discuss details on relief operations and disaster management.

Secretary Soliman said that initial reports gathered by DSWD – Disaster Response Operations, Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) as of 11:00 am, July 14,  show 4,935 families with 25,949 persons have been affected by the typhoon. These families come from the City of Manila and Pateros in the National Capital Region; Dingalan in Aurora and Mololos in Bulacan, Region III;  Rizal, Quezon, and Laguna in Region IV-A; Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon in Region V.

Twenty (20) evacuations centers have been set-up in the affected areas serving 433 families with 1,911 persons.

Initial reports also show that 495 houses were totally damaged and 445 partially damaged. The damaged houses are located in Rizal, Quezon, and in Siruma, Camarines Sur.

Secretary Soliman said that DSWD Regional Offices in the affected regions have started to  provide relief assistance to typhoon victims.

The DSWD office in Region V extended 1,000 packs worth P150,000 to affected families from Siruma, Camarines Sur.

Likewise, the DSWD-Region V assisted 473 persons who were stranded in the different ports of Pasacao, Pioduran, Tabaco and Pilar in Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon.

Secretary Soliman added that each DSWD Regional Office has at least P300,000 standby funds and at least 1,000 family packs stockpile of food and non-food commodities composed of rice, noodles, sardines, clothes, blankets, soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste.

The SWAD Teams continue to coordinate with the concerned local government units for the needs of disaster victims. ### (DSWD-Social Marketing Service) 14 July 2010
